WHY?
“Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” (Gen 1:2). What is a shape with no form? We try to picture this. You can’t see formless. You can’t see dark. Chaos really can’t be pictured.
What changed everything? What gave form, light…meaning?
“And God said.”
It is striking that no other creatures, only humans, have sophisticated language. That is how God has chosen to give himself and his gifts to us. Words. Words that give form, light, meaning, point, purpose. They are life creating, life saving, life changing. One of Jesus’ favorite refrains in Mark is a most gracious invitation: “He who has ears let him hear.”
